CHARACTER
Name: Signless
Canon: Homestuck
Age: 15-16 sweeps. About 33 earth years.
Timeline: Before his capture and execution
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: no
Personality: Everything we know about the Signless is a story, told by others. Never has it been told from his own view point. One such person is Doc Scratch. We can assume the story is true, given Doc Scratch does not see a point in lying and speaks only truth.
There is little to be said about the Signless, but from what we do know we can establish a personality; The Signless is the ancestor of Karkat Vantas, plus the post scratch version of Kankri Vantas and from this fact we can conclude aspects of his personality from the two trolls. While Karkat is a rage infested grub, his ancestor does not hold the rage of his descendent, until he later became called the Sufferer; the personality change was after his capture and torture by the high bloods when his views and beliefs were lost and his rage was released and embodied within the Vast Expletive, his last words. Karkat is an angry, crabby troll and it would be a sad day when the Signless saw his descendent, a pure image of his rage and frustration.
In relation to Kankri, who is very wordy, Signless is as well. This is shown in his travels about Alternia. Where he preached about the low bloods plight and the inequalities within the hemospectrum. Kankri tends to go on lengthy tangents about triggers, equality and what is the ‘non’ offensive way to address an issue. In other words he is a parody of a social justice blogger. While Kankri and Signless are one in the same, the difference is from pre and post scratch, Signless is the much more mature and collected character.
It is believed that because of his mutant blood color, The Signless has visions of the peaceful game session that preceded his universe. This is how he knows of Karkat and his future existence; shown to him through prophetic dreams. As explained here http://www.mspaintadventures.com/scratch.php?s=6&p=005953 and herehttp://www.mspaintadventures.com/scratch.php?s=6&p=005954, since it can be a bit confusing to explain.
We now know that this is because of his job as a Seer in his pre-scratch session on Beforus. Where he was Kankri Vantas and the Seer of Blood.
As a result of this prophecy, he preached peace, equality and co-operation. This was something that was not valued or cared for on Alternia. Through his words grew followers, who were treated as friends by The Signless. He attracted others quietly by sharing his beliefs and accepting trolls as they were and not by how the hemospectrum saw them. From this we can conclude that the Signless has a very caring personality, one that would be willing to listen and comfort when a problem arose. He has great patience and the will to offer advice when needed and if he could not offer such assistance then he would accommodate with simple understanding and acknowledgement.
Signless did not preach to everyone, only those who wished to listen, which is to say he planned his actions before initiating them. Given the taboo he preached, it made sense for him to be aware of his surroundings and to be prepared. A mentionable trait of The Signless was that he grew up in unusual circumstances; he was found in the brooding caverns, a mutant grub, with no lusus sensitive to his scent. In this case he was picked by an adult troll, named The Dolorosa, who would come to raise him. This act was not customary for troll culture and thus it’s seen as a taboo. As he was raised he learned to speak calmly as his lusus does; he knows what to say, when to say it and how to comfort with his words. He learned how to be patient and through his ‘mother’s’ kindness a willingness to pursue his beliefs was born.
While he understands its purpose and its ridiculous right to control, he does not believe in the hemospectrum. It is a humble and kind denial of the dogma and it allows him to be a Leader, one who has the ability to win other trolls to follow in his beliefs. The Signless is not an aggressive leader but so chooses to be an example of what he preaches. It is to be mentioned that the Signless does not view himself as a leader. To him he is the word that carries his dream along. He hopes to only change the views of others and that his words will be heard; in a hope that he can create a peace for all. Other trolls will see how happy he is and wish to be granted into such a world. His followers are driven by his charisma and want for his dream to become a reality, perhaps shaping his ideas into their own and to create individualism in a belief that is greater then something they have ever known.
Despite his calm ways The Signless is still capable of anger and frustration. However, he does not explode into tangents and expletive filled metaphors as his descendant would. In this instance his course of action is more familiar to Kankri’s method. It is a more cool and controlled rage. He would look down upon others with disappointment, like a father to their son, knowing very well a disappointed parent is worse than an angry one. This said Signless is not much of a fighter; he prefers a peaceful method of protesting or trying to solve the issue with simple problem-solving. In the area of self defense I feel that he would only fight to defend himself or those he cared about, but only if necessary. He is not a coward but he has lived a life of taboo and traveling in hiding; he has learned to confront only if needed and fight only if one is to find them in danger.
It would be some time before the Signless would open up to those close to him; I believe that he can be a reserved troll. He has a willingness to help, care and comfort, but when it comes to his own matters he might struggle with them. We can see this behavior in Karkat and Kankri as well; while he has an ability to consult with his friends and help them out with their problems. This can be matters of the heart or how to pursue the game; Vantas’ have always struggled with themselves and their problems. They are a reserved group, dismissing matters that are personal, usually with vast expletives and yelling in the case with Karkat. The Signless might change the topic or simply dismiss a question if he does not wish to answer it. We can see this with his relationship for the Disciple; The Disciple had to open his heart to her, which implies that his heart had been closed from the start. Once his heart opens, he is a loving companion. As it is said, The Disciple and Signless’ love surpassed the need for quadrants, intertwining all four within one single quadrant.
In regards to Country within a Palace, Signless’ personality is that of initial hesitance, because being a sexually modest and emotionally guarded. He would not be keen on such casual relations. However, his general tendency towards selflessness will cause him to push past such hesitance for the sake of others and the setting he is within. Being a troll also grants him the culture to come to terms with casual sex. It isn’t unheard of for trolls to sleep around with others outside of their quadrants. These tendencies will allow him to faire well within CWP.
Background: http://mspaintadventures.wikia.com/wiki/Ancestors
Abilities: Survival Instincts – During his travels the Signless and his close followers would have to constantly hide and live as such. Being a mutant the Signless had to live alone to hide his blood color for some time. He knows how to survive on his own and get what he needs to live off the land.
Troll - The Signless is a troll and he is more durable than that of a human. Trolls tend to have a longer life span and have physically tougher skin then humans. To reference this Karkat, during the trolls’ session, got stabbed 3 to 4 times and it seemed to only piss him off; he healed within a month or so in comparison to a human which takes 6-8 weeks for a stab wound to heal. Trolls are naturally nocturnal, this would give Karkat the ability to see in the dark and be active during the evening hours without needing sleep. However, for Karkat sleep is usually not something he allows himself to do. Throughout the whole session with his team, not once did he take a wink of shut eye.
Prophetic visions/dreams – His ‘true’ ability. It is said that because of the Signless mutant blood color he was able to see visions of a past Alternia. It is such a place where his present home was filled with peace and calm, the Alternia from before the scratch of his team’s session. These visions come and go, and the Signless has no control over them or desire to. He is only granted glimpses of the past and cannot control anything that he sees.

Prose Log Sample: Signless had not been happy with much of anything as of recent. He had found that wandering the tower wasn't as comforting as it had been in the past, instead seeking comfort in single floors. Again death had visited him, during one of the events the tower liked to throw his way and while he was used to it. Death..was not pleasant when you partake in it or witness that of another. He found himself plagued by guilt at the death of his friend and while it was now nothing more then a memory. Mituna was currently present and accounted for, but he couldn't help but feel responsible for what happened.
Confusion was another visitor. For the pity he felt for the older troll...he had considered him a friend and he had been powerless to do anything. If he had been stronger could he had saved them both? Quelled one and saved another? He did not know the answer to this and time would never tell. Yet, he could not bring himself to see the murderer. Even if he wanted to yell, attack, confront the other and demand answers.
His musings clouded his thoughts and he came to advance upon the floor. It was a floor he had visited frequently at times, finding the death of the universes shocking, but calming in their own way. Perhaps if he had been at current attention he would have avoided the floor, especially upon seeing the other...musing in the corner.
The blue blood's presence woke him from his stupor. His eyes narrowed and he froze. A part of him wished to advance while another kept his distance. He stood at the entrance...just observing for now. There was a chance the other would not notice him and he could move on...if he would let himself come to ignore. It was unlikely.
